File has been a keen observer for much of his life. It has been instrumental
in his successful careers as an actor, theatrical designer, and educator,
but it is most fundamentally expressed in his photography.
Dan
believes it is his work in the theatre, especially as a lighting designer,
helps him translate three-dimensionality in the two-dimensional medium
of photography. In his diverse range of styles and subject matter, whether
color or black and white, the common factor of his visual work is the play
of light and shadow, whether controlled in the stage and studio or 'found'
