| I take liberties with the particular scene
I am painting. |
My work starts
as a real place I've visited but I take the freedom to alter it. My goal
is to draw the viewer in with a combination of color, composition and texture.
I try to give the feeling of a place that leaves room for the viewer to
imagine they've been there. |
I construct a piece with a loose under-painting which may
be burnt sienna then build layers of color. I usually start with bright,
high-key color that gets toned down as I progress. I look for ways to create
distance with paint, like streams or creeks winding back into the distance,
creating an illusion of space and depth.
